ipad or smart phone usage in The Netherlands

I'll be taking a 2 wk. bicycle tour of the Netherlands in June/July and am thinking about getting an ipad for photos, journaling, keeping in touch via Facebook and Skype, email, etc. I also have an iphone, which can do almost the same things. I have AT&T for my service plan. Is it worth it to get an ipad? I'm also looking for any tips about how to use a device in Netherlands, what changes to my plan I might need to make, etc. Any suggestions for me?

Connie, Given the intended uses for the device, my suggestion would be to use an iPad or iPad Mini rather than an iPhone. Dealing with the small screen and keyboard is fine for "light duty" use, but it's painful for extended use. It may be useful to take your iPhone for keeping touch with family via texting or short calls. However, be VERY SURE to disable the cellular data and data roaming, as the costs can be HUGE! If you plan on using voice or text at all, you may want to speak with AT&T regarding one of their "travel packs", which will reduce the costs slightly. You could also arrange for limited data access, depending on how that fits with your budget. The iPad or Mini should work well for photos, journalling, etc. using only Wi-Fi. Although you'll be on a bicycle tour, I'm assuming you'll be in hotels at night and it's likely most (if not all) of those will offer Wi-Fi, either included in the cost of the room or for a small fee. Happy travels!

I love traveling with my iPad. I'd like to get the mini, as it would be even better for travel in my opinion. I just can't justify the cost as long as what I have works. You can find wifi almost everywhere these days.

I also love traveling with my iPad and iPhone. I am also on AT&T and have had great luck with service over the years. It is much easier to email, check websites, etc. with the iPad than the phone. I have the camera connector and daily transfer my pictures from the camera memory card to the iPad. I can see the pictures that way, and have a backup in case something happens to the memory card.
