A friend and I are planning on traveling to Germany and Austria this summer and we are currently looking for itinerary advice. We know we would like to see some of the beautiful castles and spend some time hiking the mountains in addition to seeing some cities, but we will be traveling by rail pass. I am wondering if anyone has any advice on how to accomplish all this. I appreciate any advice!
There are castles all over Germany, but I think the best places to see them are on the Rhein between Koblenz and Bacharach and in Baveria. Bavaria, in the area around Garmisch-Partenkirchen and in the the Illertal of the Allgäu near Oberstdorf is a good place to hike. I'm not big on cities, but my favorite is Munich.
I'm not sure you need a rail pass. In Germany, there are many offers that will probably save you money vs. a rail pass. See here for discount offers of the Bahn or here for all day passes on regional trains.
