When you purchase the ticket using your Eurail pass for the discount. do you have to go directly to Murren or can you stop off in Lauterbrunnen and explore then take a later train to Murren??
To go to Murren you have to disembark in Lauterbrunnen and switch modes of transportation. There are two options: a) take the bus to Stechelberg at the end of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and then take the cable car up through Gimmelwald to Murren or, b) take the cable car up to Grutschalp above Lauterbrunnen and transfer to the train to Murren. Therefore, you will be able to stop off to explore Lauterbrunnen before going on to Murren. I do not think the Eurail pass applies to transit to Murren. The Swiss Pass does. It is available in 4-, 8-, 15-,and 30-day versions. All modes of transportation in the Lauterbrunnen area are operated by the Berner Oberland regional system. You can get a Berner Oberland regional pass that gives free transit on several mountain routes and 25-50%discounts on others. It comes in 7- or 15-day versions.
Thanks Dwayne you answered my questions. Most helpful.
Shelley, from Interlaken Ost into the Lauterbrunnen Valley and up to all of the alpine villages (including Muerren), your Eurail pass will only get you a 25% discount. Its a zero discount (full fare)on the bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg.
The train from track 2A in Interlaken Ost goes no further than Lauterbrunnen. It is a local that takes 20 minutes. No seat reservations needed. The train runs every 30 minutes. Once in Lauterbrunnen, Dwayne decribes the two methods of getting to Muerren quite nicely. Except for the limited discount with your Eurail pass, you will love it.
BTW, the gondola from Stechelberg goes to Gimmelwald. To get to Muerren, you walk a few feet in the same station to a second gondola that takes you to Muerren. It's great.
