Thought I read somewhere that some modes of transportation have changed between these towns. What is the best way?
Wayne, there are two train stations in Interlaken. The one connecting into the Lauterbrunnen Valley is the Interlaken Ost station. Running out of track 2B, the Jungfraubahn train makes the 22 minute very scenic journey into Lauterbrunnen.
Once in Lauterbrunnen, there are two ways to get to Murren. One way is to walk across the street from the Lauterbrunnen train station (you'll see the post office) and catch the gondola up to Grutshalp. At Grutshalp, you change to a cog train for a short ride into Murren.
For the second way, take the postal bus from in front of the post office and ride 10-12 minutes to the Stechelberg gondola station. This gondola takes you to Gimmelwald. At the Gimmelwald, you walk a few feet to a second gondola that will take you to Murren. All very scenic.
There is also a postal bus that runs from Interlaken into Stechelberg. It does stop in Lauterbrunnen and other stops.
I haven't heard of any change in the transportation system. There may some maintenance going on with one of the gondola systems. When we were there, the gondola up to Grutshalp was closed for temporary maintenance.
the change was several years ago when they replaced the old funicular up to Grutschalp with a cable car that follows the same route. I' m thinking the change was around 2006?
That's the downtime I was talking about in my above post. I thought is was temporary but apparently it was longer term. We stayed at the hotel Silberhorn in Lauterbrunnen and our side window looked out onto the gongola station. We could see that it was not in service. We were there in early June of 2007.
