Our family of 5 (kids 15,20 200 is driving from Murren, switzerland to Nice, France - research showing about 8 hours. Anyone have any tips on the drive or great places to stop and stretch, eat, or see a beautiful view - or a Castle? We are thinking of Chamonix/mont blanc and Aosia..... I can not find too much on the area b/t Turin and Nice.. Thanks!
There are two different scenic ways to get to Aosta, Italy from Murren. One is to go to Chamonix see the gorgeous Mont Blanc then drive thu the Mont Blanc Tunnel ( around 40 euros ) or take the old road over the Grand St Bernard pass ( a new highway goes this way too , but misses the stop at pass where the st bernards actuallly are) then wind you way thru the valley into Aosta. Either way once you are in Aosta you can stop and see the Roman ruins and walk around the old area. It is a toss up as to which way to go. Both scenic.
So you would get to Chamonix before Mont Blanc - sorry I haven't looked at the map closely for a while... Both routes sound wonderful and we'll have a hard time deciding I am sure. About the first part - after leaving Murren, will the drive be as scenic as if we had been on the Golden pass (or close?).
Thanks!
Yes, very scenic. You could make a stop in Gstaad for a short walk around the village area if you like. Or stop in Montreux and visit Chateau de Chillon. Put your route into www.viamichelin.com to get driving distances and approx travel times. Chamonix is right at the base of Mont Blanc. It is another great place to visit and you could easily spend a couple of days there with you family. Gorgeous views of Mont Blanc from Chamonix. Less pretty views of Mont Blanc from the Italy side.
