We will have our own transportaion (not public train or bus) while visiting Interlaken. If the weather is good we would like to do the Jungraujoch excursion. However, if foggy, rainy or too cloudy the trip is not worth the cost. What alternatives are available that can be completed within 8 hours? Quaint area villages or sites would be enjoyable, but I do not know where to visit. What about nearby wineries or cheese factory tours? Thanks for the help.
We have visited Interlaken twice and both times it was too cloudy to take the Jungfrau train. The first time we toured Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. The second time we took the train to Berne and had a nice day touring the city. We tried to visit the Broc chocolate factory but it was closed for a holiday (some Saint day). The cheese factory in Gruyeres is a nice tour as well and is in a picturesque village. Hope you have better luck than we did with the Jungfrau!
You might consider a short trip to nearby Brienz at the northeast end of Lake Brienz.
If it's really rainy in the valley too, go visit the Rügen Brewery in Interlaken.
It rained on us one day and we went to the Open air museum outlined in the RS guidebook. It was very educational and mostly inside. The only time outside was when we were walking from house to house. It was a great place to spend a rainy day and was so easy to get to. All the details are in the RS book.
It's called Ballenberg, and we also visited on a rainy day. It's an interesting place to visit.
