Does anyone know if there is a place to rent kayaks/canoes in Interlaken. Is there a public swimming beach? Has anyone done the Berner swim in Bern? Is the water freezing cold in August? And were there lockers there nearby near the public pools area?

No beach, public or otherwise, as far as I recollect in Interlaken. Remember that both the Brienzersee and the Thunersee are glacial lakes and quite deep. You might find the water less warm than you might hope for. There is a small playground near the Ost station with BBQs, I think, and lakeside equipment but I don't think it runs to a beach. The photos referenced in the previous post are all in the surrounding area. None of that white water is in Interlaken. Remember that a few years ago several people were killed canyoning.
