Arriving mid afternoon one day and having a full day the following to head up to Murren and Schilthorn we want to stay in Interlaken. Can anyone provide a reasonable hotel and or B&B.
just got back from the berner oberland. definitely would not stay in interlaken. We stayed in Lauterbrunnen and I would also not advise that- it had alot of road noise at night. GO HIGHER!
Why not just stay in Muerren instead of stopping in Interlaken? There are lots of hotels and my favorite is the Chalet Fontana. www.chaletfontana.ch
Most travelers on this forum choose to sleep in one of the small alpine villages above the Lauterbrunnen Valley--instead of Interlaken. There are reasons for that.
Kent is correct about staying in or above Lauterbrunnen. One reason is that you can see the alps from Interlaken but in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, you see the alps on steroids. Also, the towns are smaller and more scenic. Murren is everything you would expect to see in a Swiss alpine village.
I agree with staying in Muerren. I have treasured memories of arrving in Muerren to a star-spangled sky on night and then the surprise of the "reach out and touch them" Alps when opening my window curtains the next morning. The cow's bells in the area make gorgeous music, also.
Murren is so close to Interlaken, stay there, you will be so much happier. We just got back and had a great time. We stayed at Chalet Helvetia which was an apartment with a balcony with views of lots of waterfalls. Loved it. Interlaken was not great. A few hours is all you really want in Interlaken.
I agree with the other posters--would not stay in Interlaken. We were just in Switzerland in May and stayed in Wengen and it was perfect--view of the Eiger and Jungfrau from our window. Murren or Lauterbrunnen would be good options. Interlaken is busy with casinos and tacky shops. Not much charm there--the train station there is handy for connecting to various parts of Switzerland. As someone pointed out, it only a 20 minute ride to Lauterbrunnen.
I'll add to all the votes for Murren. Lauterbrunnen is another possibility. It's in the valley, so none of the views as from Murren. Still, the valley is awesome. If you absolutly must stay in Interlaken, I can highly recommend the Rugenpark B&B not far from the west train station. But, as much as I like that B&B, I still encourage you to head directly to Murren. All that Interlaken has to offer over Murren are souvenir shops, over-priced restaurants, and lots of tourists who wish they could see the mountains.
Whow- thank you for the quick replies. Unfortunately we have to catch an 8.00 AM train to Venice after the one day up to Murren. It does not seem feasible for 4- 65+ to get mobile any earlier and have to make 6 changes of trains to get to Venice - when 3 will do it. I appreciate the info and will file it away as I will be back to Switzerland on another excursion. This is #3 to Europe. I know there are those out there who go yearly - Oh I wish I could. Any further insight as to hotels and B&B's in Interlaken would still be appreciated.
Check out the town's website at www.interlaken.ch for lodging. Have fun!
Shelley,
You might check the Guidebook for accommodation suggestions in Interlaken. Except for Balmer's Herberge, many of the accommodations there are somewhat "upscale" so expect to pay more than you would at places in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.
You might also consider staying in Lauterbrunnen, as it's only a short ride from there to Interlaken Ost on the small local train. If you plan well and get your group "moving" early, that's a solution that might work.
Good luck and happy travels!
Hi Shelley... everyone has good advice but I am going to just answer your question. If you want to stay in Interlaken, I suggest Bernerhof. It is near Interlaken West train station, has a view to die for and the people there have become our friends after staying there four times. Have a good trip !!
