Interesting Towns NOT in Ricks' Guidebooks - Germany

I saw this topic over on the Italy thread, and thought why not get suggestions for other countries? It might be nice to have a thread for each country here in Europe. So, I am starting the Germany thread.

Bad Homburg, Kronberg, Königstein, Büdingen, Seligenstadt, Lübeck, Quedlinberg

"Interesting Towns NOT in Ricks' Guidebooks" Because he provides only a survey and not an extensive guide, Rick usually leaves out a lot of interesting locations. In my opinion, though, his Germany book has too many omissions. Off the top of my head, I don't recall what he includes, but I'm pretty certain the following interesting towns didn't make the list: Aachen, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Passau, Regensberg, Lindau, Friedrickshafen... I don't recall if Bamburg and Wurtzburg made the cut either.

I'm a fan of Schlesswig and Kiel up North. I haven't been to Luebeck yet.

Second Luebeck, Bamberg and especially Passau. I see that even Hamburg isn't in the 2009 book - a shame. Keil, Naumburg, Erfurt, Eisenach, Leipzig, Weimar. Happy travels!

In all do fairness, Rick does say that you have to find your own back doors. My three favorite places in Germany (Allgäu, Northern Black Forest towns, and the Harz) are not in his guidebooks.

Loved Bamberg (maybe even more than Rothenburg-less touristy)and enjoyed Regensberg. I also was surprised to like Garmisch and Partenkirchen as much as I did. Great hiking around there. I found Lonely Planet's Munich, Bavaria and the Black Hills very useful for me.

Hi.

There are lots of good to great places in northern, central, and eastern Germany that are omitted in his books. Yes, Lubeck is definitely a must-see, my first city in Germany on my first trip. Also I heartily recommend some of the places in the north and east listed in some of the above postings...some are real cities of culture.

I love this post, but not as much as I loved some of the towns I've found in Germany. It was great being the only American in town. Love you guys, but I'm keeping mine a secret!

Celle and Lueneburg are nice.

Also, Limburg (lovely cathedral).

Two favorites of mine not covered in Rick's guide book are Regensberg and Bamberg. Great places to visit.
