My wife and I will be traveling by car from Salzburg to Venice over the Christmas holiday and are looking to stop off and spend 1 or 2 nights along the way, but don't know what towns are best. Can you please recommend 1 or 3 towns in Austria along the way between Salzburg and Venice on A10 or A2? Thank you!
You'll have to go thru the Brenner Pass at Innsbruck to get from Salzburg to Venice. The roads thru the Alps are otherwise closed for the most part. Stay in Innsbruck. It's a great medium size city, and the mountain vistas are absolutely incredible. Check Hotel.com, Venere.com or AirBnB.com for accommodations. I personally like to stay NW of the airport at Kranebitten, which is 2-3 miles from the city.
Hallstatt, Austria! It is only about an hour from Salzburg, between Salzburg and Venice. It is a magical place! I receommend Gasthof Simony.
Innsbruck is way out of the way. The way to go is through Tarvisio, not through the Brenner pass, which would be almost 2 hours longer. I would stop in Tarvisio and go ski.
Thanks guys! This is great - I just booked my stay in Hallstatt and will look into Trevisio.
It's TARVISIO, not Trevisio. Check the spelling. If you look into Trevisio you might end up in Treviso and there will be no skiing there for sure. Treviso is just north of Venice in an area as flat as a pancake.
I liked Hall in Tirol, Austria for a brief stop. It has a small but nice medieval center. Innsbruck wasn't much of an attraction, more of a center for skiing activity in the surrounding mountains. It may have some apre ski life at that time of year. You might also like to visit the iceman in Bolzano, Italy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%96tzi Since you are there in the winter, I'd skip the Dolomite route and go south through Verona. The Ampitheater in Verona is the third largest in the world and still used for opera (not in December though). There are some other Roman ruins and a nice medieval/rennaisance center. We didn't make any other stops I'd recommend through there, drove straight from Verona to Venice, but you might check out Vincenza and/or Padua.
