Last October, my son and I arrived in Frankfurt from Vancouver, Canada. Security check in Vancouver was a breeze. But going through security in Frankfurt for a connecting flight to Hamburg was something else. Our luggage was scanned twice, we had to take our belts off for repeated body scans. Is this standard procedure to have this tough security for inter-German flights?
Well it is fairly standard in Switzerland and Ireland too.
It varies by airport. I've connected through Munich airport twice from the US and once via Dusseldorf and didn't have to go through any security screening. A couple months ago I flew from Hamburg (no connection) back to the US and security was very thorough for transatlantic flights...three separate security screenings.
It is Germany. And Germans take this idea of security very seriously. My wife once wore her money belt through security and it was enough to get invited to the little room and nearly a strip search. They are serious.
That must be a sight for sore eyes, canoe paddles, hockey sticks, maple leaves, and all. Bring beer.
