Insurance for driving a car in France

We are doing a home exchange and using a car in Nice for a month. Do we need extra insurance? We are from Vancouver, Canada.

If you rent with a Visa gold card from Auto Europe, there is some insurance attached. Better is a lease for rentals over 20-some days from Renault USA or Auto Europe because all insurance is included in the price. We've done it both ways and will use a Renault USA lease this summer for an extended stay.

Thanks for the information. We are trading cars, so we aren't renting. I will check with my insurance company to see if we are covered. However, normally for ICBC, it is the car that is insured, not the driver.

Patty: Are you able to contact the owners of the car you'll be borrowing (I realize they're French), to ask them if their insurance covers you when driving their car?
