I would like suggestions of 2 places for stopovers as I travel by train from Innsbruck to Stassbourg. Ideally I would like to take the trip that goes through the alps via Garmish Partenkirchen. Any ideas ?

Louise, I would take this northern route too, instead having to go from Innsbruck through Switzerland. I would skip Switzerland too. You can a direct train Innsbruck-Garmish Partenkirchen. Then after that, depending on your time constraint, one or two more stops en route, from Garmish Partenkirchen to Munich or Augsburg before the final leg to Strasbourg. I assume you do have some time otherwise going through Switzerland is most direct. If you're already familiar with Munich, then see Augsburg, a smaller historical and cultural town.

Not sure if "stopover" means a few hours or a full day. If you choose to go west thru Switz and then up to Strasbourg check out the steel alpine coaster at Imst - it's a blast for any kid between 10 and 80; Bregenz is a nice town on the lake; Stein-Am-Rhein is a really neat little town on the Rhine; Schaffhausen is a medieval gem: and the altstadt of Freiburg is not to be missed.
