Hi Everyone
We're going to be driving from Innsbruck to Salzburg on October 3rd, and was wondering if anyone has some suggestions for a route itinerary. I'm thinking about traveling through towns such as Kitzbuhl and St. Johann in Tirol, and more. Basically taking the low road instead of driving up through Germany. I guess we want to maximize our Alpine exposure on the way to Salzburg. The Hills are Alive!! Any thoughts or comments are greatly appreciated!
Yes, that's a good idea. A possible route would be to exit the A93 autobahn just north of Kufstein that goes toward Niederndorf (rte B172). At Niederndorf go south to the village of Epps (rte L379). It's a little farming community, but the highlights are the horse farms that raise a special breed of beautiful golden horses. From there you go on down to Kufstein and then work your way over to St Johann and on to Kitzbuhl. beyond Kitzbuhl, the best place to visit is Zell Am See, which you'll probably like best of all.
Hi Bart,
Just a suggestion...from St. Johann in Tirol, continue on to Bad Reichenhall and "down" through Ramsau and Berchtesgaden on your way to Salzburg. More stunning scenery.
Paul
Yes, I think going through these small towns situated between giant alpine mountains is the type of stunning scenery that were looking for! Berchtesgaden sounds & looks awesome!
One addtional question: Is it a hassle crossing in & out of Germany to Austria in the same day? I've looked at the map, and it looks like we'll have to do 2 or more border crossings. I don't think it's a problem for me (American), but my traveling partner is from the Phillipines and has a tourist VISA for Austria (with the Schengen agreement to travel into other EU contries.)
Any thoughts?
Thanks again for both of your comments!
Hey Bart,
There are no "border crossings" between Germany and Austria anymore. It's just like going from one state to another here in the USA.
For a nice church with a stunning backdrop, stop in Ramsau (we stayed last Oct.) 15 min. before Berchtesgaden.
The photo on the "home page" looks even better in person.
