Trying to get a jump on the trip down to Venice, staying in Fussen and thought a closer spot (albeit only an hour or so) would make the next day through the mountains better. Thoughts?
(no can do Bressanone, Italy due to a huge horse fest)
Hi Scott, I'd suggest Hall in Tirol just 15 minutes from Innsbruck. We stayed 4 times ('01, '03, '05, '10) at the Gasthof Badl. Love the Badl and Hall in Tirol (obviously!). http://www.badl.at www.worldisround.com/articles/362561/index.html Just over the Austria/Italy border is the very charming old town of Sterzing/Vipiteno. Never stayed here, but we've visited 3 times from our stays in Hall in Tirol 40 minutes away. How about staying in the Val Gardena (Ortisei, St. Christina or Selva) in the Dolomites? This is 40 minutes further than the drive to Brixen/Bressanone and closer to your goal of Venice. From here you could drive the amazing Gardena Pass or the Sella Pass on the way to Venice. The Dolomites are amazing to see. You could even go further and stay in the Alta Badia. The Gardena Pass separates the Val Gardena and the Alta Badia. http://www.val-gardena.com www.worldisround.com/articles/351565/index.html www.worldisround.com/articles/355539/index.html Paul
Why don't you just stay in Innsbruck? The mountains there are absolutely incredible. It's easy to jump on the train, go thru the Brenner Pass and you're in Northern Italy.
The city has all prices of accommodations, and all will be quite acceptable. It's just a city that's easy to deal with.
