I am planning a trip that will include 3 nights in Austria. I want all 3 nights in the same town, and day trips are expected. Would you suggest Innsbruck or Salzburg? I enjoy castle ruins, beer gartens, people watching, architecture, cobble stones, and good food. OH, and of course, I will have a car. So, would you suggest Innsbruck or Salzburg? Thanks for the help.
I was pretty unimpressed with Innsbruck, and probably would not go back. It wasn't awful, it just didn't seem like it was worth my time.
I'd pick Salzburg in a heartbeat. But I'd also suggest an overnight in Hallstatt - that was one of the highlights on a trip that included Austria.
Salzburg, definitely (OK, I'm biased - I lived there for a semester during college)!
Salzburg! You can even do Innsbruck as a day trip from Salzburg. There are lots of tours- Sound of Music, Salt Mine, Hitler's Eagle's nest, Burchesgarden, etc. etc, etc. The city itself is wonderful. If you are there in late Nov./ Dec. , the Chrismas market is very special.
Hi Rob,
While I love the area around Innsbruck, I'm not crazy about Innsbruck itself. Between the two you are looking at, I'd certainly go with Salzburg. Although you didn't ask, I'd just like to say that with a car, we prefer to base in Ramsau (Berchtesgaden area) and day trip to Salzburg. based here (or Salzburg) the list of day trips seem endless. The Salzkammergut, Hallstatt, Zell am See, Berchtesgaden, Konigsee, Bad Reichenhall, Hohenwerfen Fortress and even "Mad" King Ludwig's Neues Schloss (Herrenchiemsee) to name a few.
If interested, we have photo's of most of these places at:

Hope this helps.

Innsbruck in the winter (by far), Salzburg at every other time of year.
Thanks for all the help!
Rob
I've been to both and will happily return to Salzburg every chance I get. Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities anywhere.
Innsbruck isn't horrible, just not as good of choice IMO as Salzburg.
From Salzburg you have some choices of daytrips. We went to Berchtesgaden to see the salt mines.
I liked the old center in Hall in Tyrol (different than Hallstadt), but we were going that way and I'm not sure I would recommend it unless you will be in Innsbruck.
Definitely Salzburg.
