inns and hotels in toledo and madrid

We are scheduled to go to Madrid and Toledo in March, I have researched hotels in Rick Steve's book and trip advisor. I just wanted to know if any of you had a favorite to suggest. We prefer something in the historical areas and do not want to stay at a chain hotel.

We enjoyed staying at the II Castillas in Madrid. Medium price, great staff and newly renovated. Just off the Gran Via and close to the Plaza Puerto del Sol. Everything within walking distance.

In Madrid, I’ll recommend Hostal Acapulco right in the old center on Plaza del Carmen…highly-rated on tripadvisor, very clean, cheap, and nice neighborhood view from balcony on plaza side. Others will recommend Hotel Europa a couple of blocks down and slightly closer to Puerta del Sol…also gets high marks here and on tripadvisor but is more expensive. They do have a nice café with outdoor seating.

We liked Hotel Cardenal in Toledo--beautiful gardens and very nice rooms with lovely courtyard--has lots of character. The Hotel Europa in Madrid was in a very lively area and I would be concerned about noise. Don't know if our hotel was a major chain but it was very nice and we got it on priceline for 85 USD per night--Hotel Santo Domingo. Had a small terrace off the room and we had a view of the palace.

We have used Hotel Europa four time as recently as last year. Love it. It has been upgrade substantially within the past five, five years. It is in the heart of the old section - Puerto del Sol -- and there is lots of street activities. It doesn't bother but the back rooms are quieter.

Toledo : Hostal Posada de Manolo - Near the cathederal. I have stayed there on two prior trips and am in the process of making reservations for the fall. Building dates from the 1400's, but has been made into a very nice establishment. Breakfast is served in the upstairs lounge, overlooking the cathederal. Very good place and nice people as well.

In Madrid I like two hostals - Hostal Phillipe V, and Hostal Montecarlo. Both at 15 Gran Via, with a doorman even! Clean and well run.

Web sites for all of these are on the net.

We also stayed at the Hotel Cardenal which is right at the edge of the historic area. No transport needed - you just go up a very long escalator. We would return. There was parking nearby if that is a concern.

In Madrid we stayed at the Hotel Preciados which was a RS listing. Very modern. Very nice. We were very happy there. We ate at the Hotel Europa which has to be in one of the most lively areas of Madrid. It is very centrally located.
