We will be traveling to Nice in September 2011. What are some good inxpensive hotel options?
If you dont see anything to your liking in the RS guidebooks, I would give tripadvisor.com a try. You can enter your dates of stay, &set parameters like cost per night, or located in a certain area, or near a landmark. I have found that the reviews on the site are pretty honest (sometimes brutally!). Lots of folks also post their own (undoctored) pics of the hotels. The site will search prices for your specs on other sites like expedia, travelocity, booking.com, etc. You can also choose whether you want to look at just hotels, or B&B's, apartments, etc. I have used the site on my past 3 trips to narrow it down to a couple of hotels with good ratings/reviews, then I go and do a general Google search and see where I can get the best rate,--sometimes the hotel's own website offers discounts the 'discount sites' dont (like giving a % off the total rate for 3+ nights' stay). Happy searching!
another option is antibes which is a short train ride from nice. it's a smaller town with cheaper places and a picaso museum. the hotels you find in nice are more likely to be close to the town, but a bit of walk from the train station.
I liked Hotel Durante last spring. It's in the RS book. It's close to the train station but in a quiet cul-de-sac. In September the huge patio should be very nice.
A good option is the Lausanne hotel, www.hotel-lausanne-nice.com
it's located just 10 minutes from the Notre Dame Cathedral and 5 minutes from the train station.
How long are you staying? If about a week, an apt. is much cheaper than a hotel. If only a couple of days, we stayed at the Ibis, 100 yards from the train station. Around 80 E per day. Later, I found what I think is a better deal. The ETAP HOTEL Nice Californie Lenval is right on the ocean/boardwalk and is around 43E per day. Never stayed there, but the location is great.
ETAP hotels, clean, not fancy, all over France.
The good deal about the Nice ETAP on Ave Californie is that, if you get a room on the front side, the buidlings across the street are low enough that you get a great view of the Med (but through a standard small window) at the el cheapo rate.
