Vienna - would like to stay near Stephansdom
Salzburg - would like to stay on Left bank/Old Town, unless someone has a great recommendation and says it is easy access to Left bank.

Shelley, sorry, but could you reread your post then rewrite it? I am afraid I do not understand where you are talking about, Vienna or Salzburg. Which is the "left bank" in? I am not familiar with what constitutes the left bank on either S or V.

I got the 5-star Intercontinental in Vienna on priceline with a bid of $90. With taxes, it came to $312 for 3 nights, in May. Great location, great hotel.

We stayed with Helga Bankhammer on the Moosstrasse in Salzburg. Easy 10-minute bus ride into town. The room was a good size, HUGE bathroom, great breakfast. Her info is in Rick's book.

From Priceline, I got the Salzburg Renaissance for $90 in late October. Good reviews on TripAdvisor and it's right near the train station. Good luck!
