Planning a trip to Switzerland around 2/25-3/8/2009. While there, interested in attending Fasnacht. Is Fasnacht worth seeing/going? I did a quick check of a few hotels and, of course, no rooms. Any recommendations where to stay close to Basle? Planning on mainly visiting the German parts on this trip, so any recommendations on other cities to see/stay would be appreciated.
Have you seen this website yet: http://www.fasnacht.ch/?pm_1=21&mid=21
I was surprised to learn that Fasnacht doesn't begin till after Ash Wednesday. Start date in 2009 should be March 2. If Basel hotels are really booked solid during that time you might also consider staying overnight on the German side of the boarder.
We toured the German speaking part of Switzerland a couple of years ago and one of your favourite places was Bern. It's about an hour by train from Basel. The area around Lake Thun is also very nice. Just be aware that some attractions, such as the open air museum in Ballenberg and the castle in Oberhofen, will be still in hibernation that early in the year.
If you want to see the scenic beauty of Switzerland and the Alps you wont see it in Basle. The terrain around Basle is pretty flat.
You need to go South and East to a point around Interlaken and take some of the cable car rides up the mountains. Also go South and see the Matterhorn. Look at a map and see where the mountains are.
