We're planning to travel next mid-June through about July 10 in southern France and the French Alps. We're a bit leery, especially in the Alps, of being in an area inundated with cyclists and watchers, as well as hiked-up prices during the event. Has anyone had any experience with this issue?
This will only be a big problem at the start and end of each day's race... and perhaps some of the larger towns in between.
The route for next year has not been announced yet, so there is no way to predict if your travel path will hit the Tour... other than to say that the Tour usually begins in July, so you should be OK in June.
The 2010 Tour starts on July 3rd in Rotterdam, the rest of the route will be determined in the next month or so, keep an eye on www.letour.fr
Prices are already high in France in the summer, the Tour doesn't have a greater impact on that.
I've been there and sometimes the roads are blocked for a while. You can plan your travel around the route when it is announced. It's not a problem unless you are in a rush to get somewhere.
