We will be arriving in the Cassis area at the end of our trip about the 12-13th of July and thought we might take an extra day along the Riviera before flying out of Nice on the 15th. However, I'm wondering if the Riviera will be jammed with holiday crowds on the 14th--or, for that matter, whether the crowds will start building in the days prior to the holiday. Has anyone had any recent experience with the holiday?
I was in Paris for Bastile Day a couple of years ago. Streets were clobbered for a few hours around parade time, after that nothing; had no trouble finding a place to stay without a reservation. That's probably the major celebration in the whole country (flight demonstration team zooming down the river, etc).
It's mid-week this year. I've never noticed the French treating it the way we do the 4th. Definitely not a big travel day.
Have at it.
