I was just wondering if anyone has been to both of these locations and can tell me what would be a better day trip. I have been in the south of France for several weeks now and feel like I have seen a lot but do either of these have things to see or do that can't be missed? I enjoy exploring new areas and also beach time. I am almost "museumed" out! Any advice or recommendations would be great! Thanks!
Market day in St. Tropez, on Tuesday, is one of the best in Provence. Wandering the town is worth the time. Traffic to St. Tropez is heavy, go early. After spending time here, the Beaches along the Plage de l’Escalet area are small coves and are our favorite in the area. Drive down to the tiny pay lot parking there, or park just before the lot on the side of the road for free. Walk down the pathway to the coastline and you'll see a walkway with access to the coves strung along the sea.
Note: Don't park in the large pay lot, go west driving down to the small pay lot for easy access.
As for the islands, biking on the Isle of Porquerolles is so much fun. Highly recommended. We haven't visited St. Marguerite. I used the book 26 Gorgeous Hikes on the Western Cote d’Azur by Florence Chatzigianis for ideas of hikes in the area around Hyeres, St.Tropez, the Esterel Mountains and the Maures Mountains.
If you go to Sainte Marguerite, take a bottle of wine and pick up a sandwich at a vendor. The restaurants are not the best in my opinion. It is an interesting place to go, but I think I would opt for St. Tropez. Why not try Juan Les Pins? It has beaches, night life and great restaurants.
