if we don't take the Sound of Music Tour...

We probably will not take the SOMT while in Salzburg due to time contraints and it will be early November. Many things will be closed. However, I remember seeing one of Rick's programs where he describes the scenic drive which takes a similar route of the SOMT. Can anyone provide info on which roads to take to see the best scenery? We will be staying on the outskirts of Salzburg, and of course, will have a car.

The original gazebo is located on the grounds of Hellbrunn (palace?) on the outskirts of Salzburg - it's an easy bike ride from the old town so it should be very easily accessed by car. You don't have to tour the palace to see the gazebo. It's situated near the entrance in a park like area.

In November you probably won't see much in the way of mountain scenery. Salzburg sits on a plateau surrounded by the Alps, but in the winter they tend to be shrouded in clouds. I lived there for several months and never saw how extensive the mountains were around town until a particularly clear day in early May. The Schloss Leopoldskron, used for some external shots, is on Leopoldskronstrasse. Other exteriors that you might recognize were shot at Mirabell Palace, on the Getreidegasse (the main street of the old town), and near the fortress.

A great many of the scenes from SOM were shot on temporary sets or in sound stages in Hollywood, but you can get to some of the in-town locations on foot. A car won't be needed or useful. Mirabell palace, with the do-re-mi steps, the troll garden, and the arbor are right in town, not to far from the bahnhof. You can walk around the old town and see a lot of things. There is a walkway, just above the old town, below the fortress, that will take you around to the Kloster where Maria taught.

Nothing was actually shot at Leopoldskron; they couldn't get permission. They built a temporary duplicate of the waterfront boat landing and terrace elsewhere on the lake. I don't think it is there anymore. The gazebo at Leopoldskron might be the one from distance shots in the movie, moved there from the temporary set after the shooting, but all the close up shots of the gazebo were made in a sound stage.

With a car, you might want to drive out to Mondsee to see the wedding church.

The original gazebo was built for the movie on the grounds of the Meierhof, the former carriage house for the Schloss Leopoldskron (right next door to it). I attended school in that building and we had tour buses come almost daily to see the gazebo. Some years later it was moved to another location away from the lake, but it's been years since I have been there, so I'm not sure where it is located.
