If there was an extra day...

So we're travelling to GERMANY (fairy tale/romantic road) - Rothenberg, Fussen, Munich included; AUSTRIA - Salzburg, Vienna & CZECH REPUBLIC - Prague. We have an extra day in our itinerary to add to any one of these cities - which one would you recommend get the extra day & why. Please advise.

I think it's hard to say without first knowing how long you will be in each place. It would also help to know what your preferences are - history, music, food, museums, . . .

That's true and we're a family with kids aged 9 & 7. Our Itinerary is divided as follows: Germany - 8 Days; Salzburg - 2 days including train into and out of there; Vienna - 3 days including train into and out of there; Prague 3 days - same as prev.

I'd say Prague or Salzburg, but I never paid attention to what kids might like. I hope someone will opine on that aspect.

You aren't in Salzburg that long so I would recommend adding a day there. The kids would enjoy a trip to one of the salt mines. They will travel into the mine on a little train, and then get to go down some long slides from one level to another. Kids love it. We also took a trip out to visit the ice caves which was a beautiful trip but you would have to look at whether it is too hard for your younger one. It has two steep walks (about 20 minutes each) broken up with a cable car ride in the middle and inside the caves it is continually climbing stairs. It was definitely one of the highlights for my family. Both of these trips would take a half day each and there are tour groups that will take you out there.

it's a good point we only have 2 nights in Salzburg and that includes the train journey to there from Munich... we'll look into the mines as well, thanks!

I would say Salzburg. The Schoss hellbrun is a lot of fun - it's just outside salzburg with an amzing water garden with moving figures and a surprise fountain. The day i was there ,there were kids your kids age and they loved it. The salt mine is also fun and (if you have them watch the Sound of Music) they will enjoy being in that same city. Small. manageable with just enough to do - good place for your extra day

Salzburg gets my vote as well as it is a great city to walk in and much to see. Also you might even consider a half day trip to Hallstatt which is a beautiful place to visit. Sure the kids would like the boat ride on the lake from the train station. Only a couple hours from Salzburg.
