We'll be traveling from Venice, ending in Vienna, for a total of seven days, starting in mid-June. Ideas -- visit * Tyrol area 1 day + some hiking. I stayed in Jenbach in the '70s and then up to Salzburg. Enjoyed Tyrol a lot. * maybe a day+ in Bavaria, such as Füssen & castles * Salzburg 1 day
* Vienna 2+ days I'm looking for ideas and advice. Thanks --

What fun! I think that you're going to have a great trip. Vienna deserves at least a full two days. What are you interested in? RS recommends the Ringstrasse tour on Tram 22. If you buy all-day passes, you can hop on and off as takes your fancy. You get a great view of the architecture, some tempting coffeehouses to stop into, and a lot of not to be missed sights that way. The Naschtmarkt (Night Market, but runs in the day) is another excellent spot for picking up fresh produce and getting a feel for the city. Good if you want to have a picnic or some doner kebabs. Schoenbrunn Palace is not hard to reach and it's the Austrian answer to Versailles. Epic on many levels for how opulent it is, and in June, the gardens are going to be in full bloom. I'm going in February so I will miss the profusion of flowers. Are you more interested in historical sights, outdoor ones, or specific experiences? You might want to take in a concert at one of the many music halls, the opera, the concert hall or elsewhere. The Kursalon where Johann Strauss played is right in the middle of City Park, quite the setting. Salzburg is great to just walk around in, I've heard.
Heather - Thanks for your ideas. Right now I'm thinking we will have three days in Vienna. My wife is planning most of that; she's talked about most of the things you mentioned. I'm concentrating on Tyrol and Saltzburg, since I've toured them before. Right now, I'm thinking two days in Mayrhofen area (mountains and hiking), a day/night for Saltzburg. We'll probably not get to Füssen, mostly because Neuschwanstein castle will still be under renovation with scaffolding in place. All is still in planning phase right now. Enjoy your February trip!
