Ice Caves in Werfen or Hallstatt?

Has anyone been to either of these ice caves in Austria? Is one recommended over another?

I've been to the one in Hallstatt but not Werfen, so I can't compare the 2. We liked the caves in Hallstatt, you get to ride a gondola up the mountain, but it's still a 15 minute hike uphill past that to the cave. The only part I didn't like was that we got there right when a large Chinese tour group came in, so the tour was in Chinese and German only, the guide did give us her book with the English version of the tour. I'd still go again.

I went to the one in Hallstatt in May. I was disappointed that the only English tour option was by using the pamphlet. One member of my group, a german speaker, said that much more information was given by the guide in German. It was fun nonetheless. LOTS of walking though, so be ready for that. If you go to the Hallstatt ones, be sure to go up to the next level on the cable car and visit the 5 fingers platform. That is actually where we were headed, but found out once we got there that it wasn't open for the year yet. It was a real bummer, but the ice caves made it a little better!

Thanks! I'll have three kids with me (8-14) and I am trying to figure out a few different things to do besides castles! I guess even if the tour is in German they will still get the flavor of the caves.

There's another cave by the ice cave in Hallstatt, too. We didn't do that one since our then 3-year-old was done after one guided cave tour, but the kids we talked to liked both. I believe you can buy a combination ticket. The entrance is close to where the gondola drops you off.
