I need help, can't speak French, not the brightest bulb in the box

Doug, there are a few direct trains from Avignon to CDG every morning.

I am a bit confused.. the cruise ends in Avignon,, but then you want to straight to CDG,, or do you plan on staying in Paris a few days then? Or will you spend a few days in Paris precruise? There are many clean decent places to stay in Paris,, but cheaper then what?? If you tell us a rough budget ( less then 90 euros a night, less then 200 ??) then I am sure many can tell you places they recommend. I have stayed in at least 7 or 8 hotels that I consider budget to moderate and would stay again in.

PS you need minimal french to book a hotel, most if not all have icons on their websites that translate the pages into english. All you really need is the "polite phrases" ,, "hello, goodbye, please, thank you , and sorry I do not speak french do you speak any english"

It is easy to take a train in France. Most workers in the trravel/transport business speak some english. Just ask nicely and they will prob say alittle. Paris can be expensive in gen best ck one of Rick steves France books for recom on hotels in your budget and reserve in advance online in English.
