hey friends, my hubby is driving me from paris to colmar for a romantic time. google maps shows 3 routes, north, middle, south. A6 & A36 A4 A5 small roads thru epinal and forest is one way more scenic than the others? you see i was thinking the middle route (A5) would be the most beautiful because it's smaller towns and we'd get the flavor of rural france? or is there nothing to see on the road between and just get to colmar as fast as possible on the su-pear-hiway :) hugs and happy travels, robyn
you can plot your route on GoogleMaps and actually "drive" the route(s) to see which you'd like best. This is a particularly nice feature in hilly/mountainous areas. Have a great trip.
With the greatest of respect to the dear French, the A4 is really b-o-r-i-n-g. Its so boring they have put art installations along the highway to beak the monotony. Going the route Nancy over the Vosges is alright but very slow. I haven't gone via Dijon, but of course if you like wine bicycling through the vineyards around Beaune is fun. That's perhaps the longest route though.
To me the R word suggests rail as well as romantic. The train will get you to Colmar quicker and of course you can rent a car there (the next day, to save a day's rental) to sight see.
