We are planning on being in Fussen on June 1-4 and are wondering what to expect on June 2 (Christi Himmelfahrt (Ascension Day). I have read that it's a local holiday. Would that be a bad day to tour Neuschwanstein or drive around the countryside? Do many stores or restaurants close?
Yes, stores will close, but many restaurants and most tourist attractions will remain open. I don't think you need to alter your plans/
It won't be a bad day to sightsee, but, as Tom said, it's a lousy day to try to shop as most stores are closed. Souvenir shops in tourist areas are likely to be open. We were in Germany for Ascension Day several years ago. Since it falls on a Thursday this year, many people will also take Friday off and make it a long weekend, just like folks here would do if the 4th of July fell on a Thursday. It might make things crowded over the weekend and hard to find a room if you don't already have a reservation.
Ascension Day is informally called "Father's Day" - "Vatertag" in Germany and is, especially in Northern and Eastern Germany, characterized by male groups of friends, clubs, etc. going on outings or tours together, to pubs or often out of town to tourist spots, connected with hobbies, ballgames and usually lots of drinking. In catholic areas of the country, there is often a procession. As others have said, stores may be closed but restaurants will be open.
Thank you all for the information! This is helpful.
