We are traveling from Paris to either London or Portsmouth over the Christmas holidays. Raileurope seems to be booked already even though they just opened up ticket sells for that time of year yesterday Oct.14th. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I bought tickets thru the Eurostar.com site a few months ago. I printed out my ticket at home and it included my boarding pass, so I didn't have to print out a boarding pass in London. Pretty slick.
I would look at eurostar.com or tgv-europe.com instead. Both show more trains than raileurope and more sale prices.
eurostar.com. I always put myself down as UK and pick up ticket at station.
Just played on site,, they have lots of tickets left,, prices aren't great,, but did manage a DEc 23- dec29th for 120 GBP. There were lots of other times and dates available, but missed the cheapest fare on the return leg,, it all depends on the dates you choose.
And remember RailEurope is a travel agency that sells rail tickets to North Americans at a substantial markup. They don't offer every ticket on every rail line. You need to go directly to the individual train sites for tickets. Unfortunately the privatization of British rail system has made British rail the most expensive train system. Except for very early purchases there are few bargains with any British rail line.
Eurostar operates the train from Paris to London. You can buy tickets directly from them. Why go through a middleman?
Eurostar
If you want to then go to Portsmouth, you can find and book trains on:
National Rail
Forget RailEurope....probably the worst place to get train tickets.
could try eurolines. (bus). OVERNITE TRAVEL.
Sorry to be slightly off the question, but since country rail sites has been mentioned, I will go ahead. Is there a website for French rail comparable to the one for Germany and Switzerland?
It would probably be easier to get the train from Paris to Le Havre and get a ferry across to Portsmouth.

5 years ago I intentionally travelled by ferry from France to England. I had travelled by Eurostar to Paris from London, but to return I opted for the ferry. Quite a lot more effort now, though. Train to Calais, walk on ferry, train from Dover to London. I did this on a sunny afternoon in early September. I doubt the weather crossing the channel will be nice near Christmas
Just trying to give you more options.
David,
Yes, the French national rail site is www.voyages-sncf.com. If you can't read French, use SNCF's English version at www.tgv-europe.com. However, choose Great Britain as your country of residence or you will be bumped to the Rail Europe site which doesn't show all routes and doesn't offer discount fares.
Thank you, Tim. I do not read French and so could not be confident that I had the right information. I did find that using US as residence forwarded me to Raileurope, which doesn't even recognize Avignon TVG station. I was next going to try Great Britain. Thank you for confirming that this is the best option.
For all rail problems and issues, www.seat61.com will help you out and tell you where and how to book tickets across Europe. Really worth a look.

Thanks, George, this looks like a very promising site.
