How to get to Dachau from Munich

Hello!! Our European adventure is a mere 11 days away and I'm busy nailing down all of the specifics. We are spending 3 days in Munich, Germany and venturing out on day trips (1 day to Salzburg, Austria and 1 to Dachau Concentraion Camp).

My question: Has anyone been to Dachau from Munich? I read that to get to Dachau we need to take S2 to Dachau; then bus No. 726 (or on Sunday's No. 724) and that a Gesamtnetz is needed. What is a gesamtnetz and where do I get one? Is it necessarily difficult to get to Dachau?

I'm a first time European traveler and am nervous about the little things!! Any insight would be helpful.

Also, we're going to Salzburg but are skipping the SOM tour (we're backpacking). Has anyone given themselves a "self-guided" tour of Salzburg and the Sound of Music sights????

Thanks so so much!

Wendy- traveling from Munich to Dachau is easy. I forget the train that takes you there, but I recall that at an S-Bahn stations, asking at the ticket office and was told the exact line to take (if I recall, it was one of the stops near the Marienplatz). Once you get to the town of Dachau, there is a bus at the station marked "KZ" and this bus takes you right to the concentration camp. Once there, there is an exhibit in what use to be the laundry and then you walk around the grounds- very moving/sad, but extremely memmorable, including several religious (Jewish and Catholic) memorials on the grounds.

Re: SOM tour-- we did not intend to do this at 1st, BUT, I recall that in Rick's guide to Germany/ Austria, he pointed out that navigating the Salzkermergaut (sp!)- lake district outside Salzburg- is very tough on your own, so this tour is a great way to see it. Yes- the tour istelf w/ the music playing on ths buz- is silly, but the scenery is spectacular, so I reccomend doing it.

If you are staying anywhere near downtown Munich, the ticket you need for Dachau is a Munich XXL Tageskarte (day ticket). It costs €10,80 for a Partner Ticket (2-5 people). The XXL ticket covers travel within the inner two zones of Munich, which includes Dachau. A Gesamtnetz (entire network) ticket covers the entire MVV network, such as to the airport, and costs more (€18). You shouldn't need a Gesamtnetz ticket.

You can purchase any Tageskarte at a MVV ticket automat or from any ticket counter (same price).

You can find the prices for various tickets in Munich at www.mvv-muenchen.de/en/home/fahrgastinformation/tickets-preise/prices/index.html
