How to get from Rome to Dortmund Germany ---Cheaply:)

Hello! We want to go from Rome to Dortmund to viisit family. The best way I can see so far is to fly Air Berlin to Dusseldorf and then to take a train to Dortmund --but we amy have to make connections on the flight and I feel a little iffy about that. Opinions?? Suggestions???

Wizz Air flies to both Rome and Dortmund. There may not be direct flights, but probably worth checking it out.
