We were hoping to travel this July by TGV from Montparnasse to Libourne and then make a connection to Sarlat. We hear there are only bus connections
From Libourne to Sarlat during the summer due to construction on the rail line. We have a car rented in Sarlat for our stay. Are there any trains traveling to Sarlat? We would much appreciate suggestions on best options given the construction.
you should look into train from paris to bordeaux, rent a car in bordeaux then drive to sarlat. it's a quick drive on highway but local road is beautiful. you'll pass along the river with many nameless villages and castles. it can take 4 to 6 hours if you do that, but it's time well spent. the rental agency in bordeaux is next to the train station.
The train from Paris to Bordeax takes three hours. Driving from Bordeaux (St Jean) to Sarlat takes three more if you can find your way across the river in the first three tries. You can drive, with a full tank and an empty bladder, from central Paris to Sarlat in five hours. Make it seven and you can see the cathedral ar Chartres.
My wife and I trained to Sarlat from Paris with no problems at all last year. I believe we had to make two connections, but it all went fairly easily. There is a train station in Sarlat, but it's near the edge of town. That is where we arrived, and walked about 25 minutes into the town center ( easy walk ). I seem to recall that the trip took around 5 hours, but it was better than driving, in my opinion.
