I am leaving for Munich this weekend, and would like to head to Burgundy from there. I have looked but cannot seem to find a reasonable train solution or airfare. Any suggestions?
What towns in Burgundy do you want to go to? The trains to towns like Dijon and Auxerre seem to take about 10-14 hours. What kind of reasonable solution are you looking for--time, price?
Depart Muechen at 06:20 and arrive in Dijon at 15:59. See the timetables at www.bahn.de. Click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. After you get summary timetables for Muenchen-Dijon, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points.
If you book NOW at www.bahn.de, you still might be able to get a Europa-Spezial Frankreich fare of either €29 or €49 for Muenchen-Strasbourg. Print the ticket yourself. The fare for Strasbourg-Dijon with changes in Mulhouse Ville and Besancon-Viotte should be around €40-50.
Given that I am not familiar with the rail system in Europe, reasonable travel time to me for that distance would be about 6 hours on the train. As for price, of course the cheaper the better, but 150Euro sounds reasonable if it saves on travel time. I was hoping some combination of fly to another spot and train from there may work. I tried this with a flight to Paris, but no bargains there. It is beginning to look like I need to bear that long train ride.
As far as flying, you might be able to fly from Munich to Paris. Then take the train from Paris to Dijon (about 2 hrs), or whatever other town you want in Burgundy. I've never flown within Europe, but people have mentioned Ryan Air. Not sure what airports they fly in and out of. PM me if you need more help.
Yes, flying from Munich to Paris (or even Lyon) would be better than taking the train for the whole journey.
