how to dress during the summer?

We will be going back to Europe in June and will going to Paris, Normandy, Berner Oberland and Barcelona. I hear it will be very hot, but can you wear shorts inside the churches?? How should we dress?? Thanks!

I think there are gazillions of old strings of posts about this... you might want to check them out, and also consult the cool weather finder feature on this site.... That being said: I hate and loathe and fear heat (which is why I live in Seattle, natch). Europe in the summer can be BRUTAL. I would suggest bringing light colored, light weight clothing. And a sun hat. And sun screen. I think everyone will suggest that. Shorts inside churches are either frowned on (but you can get away with it) or actually verboten. Women should cover their shoulders - even if not asked to specifically. It's just - culturally courteous. It is culturally courteous to NOT wear shorts into churches, again, even if you can actually get away with it. Also - bring a water bottle, and lots of patience for lines. And have fun! :D

Brenden,, in June is may or may not be hot in most of the places you have listed,, I have been very cold in June in Paris,, and then a week later very hot. The Berner Oberland area will not likeky be hot,, when we were in Switzerland ( Wengen in July they had said the snow had just melted on some of the trails in June),, weather was more like nice spring days,, about 65-70 tops.
Pack layers, yes, shorts are ok in France and Switzerland for churches,, in Spain I do not know. Bring a rain shell,, it can be wet in Paris and Normandy,, but hey, you could luck out with decent dry days too.. go prepared for either.

This year June was cold, 60s-70s, except for two days in the upper 90s, but April and May were warm. We worn wool sweaters under our raincoats in Normandy in July. Other years it can be scorching hot.

I think it depends on the shorts you wear. Hoochie shorts or ragged cutoffs would be a no. Bermudas, golfing shorts and capris are all acceptable (except in some cases in Spain, which they will have a sign out front). Avoid denim weight items, wear breathable fabrics, including underwear (nothing worse than sweat soaked underwear). If you intend to wear short sleeves/tanktops, bring a lightweight, button up long sleeve shirt to put over it. Some churches require that your shoulders be covered, and some of them can feel downright freezing after being outside.
