We will be traveling from Geneva Airport to Montreax with an arrival time around 10 or 11. We then take the Golden Pass train to Interlaken at 1:45pm. How much time would we need to get to Château de Chillon and back in time for the train?
It took us about 45 minutes to walk to the Castle via the lakeside sidewalk. We printed out a walking tour that explained the buildings along the walk; I think you can also get the brochure from the TI. It was a lovely walk. The scenery of the mountains and lake were beautiful and the boardwalk was dotted with curious topiary trolls and well maintained beds. It took us around an 1 and a half to go through the castle with audio guide. We also enjoyed a picnic lunch in the garden outside the Chateau. We took the tram back to the Montreaux train station and it took less than 10 minutes.
I agree with Laura, you could do the tour of the castle in less than 2 hours. There are a couple of ways to get to the castle from Montreux: the train, which stops near the castle; (note: not all trains do...check the schedule or ask in the ticket office) the bus, the lake boat or on foot. If you are pressed for time, the train or bus would be the fastest. I like to approach the castle from the lake, because it looks imposing. There is a boat from Montreux to the castle, but I don't know the schedule. Buses are prbably the most frequent types....be sure to buy your tickets before boarding, they have checked on that route and I have seen people pulled off and ticketed because they were not aware of how to buy bus tickets.
Enjoy your trip.
Tommy, visiting the château takes maximum 2 hours. You either take the train to Montreux, and then the boat to the château, or take the train to Veytaux-Chillon wich is the closest train station, to the castle. The boat is free with a swiss pass. We took the boat from the castle to Montreux and it was very nice. Have a good time!
