How many days in Barcelona?

Our cruise will end in Barcelona. How many days should we plan to see the major highlights of the city? It doesn't have to be all inclusive as we plan to return to Spain some day. Our flight will depart on a Tuesday at 10:00 am. How much time should we allot to get to the airport? Should we take a taxi or the bus from Placa de Catalunya? We will each have a suitcase and a carry-on.
Thank you in advance for your advice.

Give yourself an hour to get to the airport. We were there last month in El Born - arrived at 11am on the airport bus and departed by taxi at 4:30 am (yes, it was brutal). Even at 4:30 on a Sunday morning there was traffic. The bus was actually fine and a LOT cheaper than a taxi. With your departure time, you will be fine to take the airport bus (I'd take the 7am one). You can also take the Metro from the airport. I'd say you can reasonably see Barcelona in 3-4 days if you plan busy days and don't hit everything (a tip: do some of the TI walking tours so you can see the highlights of certain areas without having to spend excessive amounts of time inside buildings -- the Modernisme and Barri Gotic tours are both really well done and cheap, also buy skip the line tickets to any of the major attractions to save time, such as La Sagrada Familia if you plan to see that). A word of warning about Barcelona is that it is a HUGE city and very spread out. If you are on a limited schedule, you may want to pick a few areas to explore or even buy a tourist bus pass so you can get around with less hassle. We are big walkers and eventually even we succumbed to the cheesy tourist bus to get up to Parc Guell and visit Montjuic in the same day, ha ha.

Chun, I agree with Kerry's suggestions, especially about the TI tours. They are great! If you are into art museums, and want to vist the Picasso Museum, the TI's Picasso tour includes adm, ission and about a 45 minute tour of the museum. You can stay on your owns after that as long as you want.

Thanks for the advice. It did not occur to me to take the TI tours. I haven't bought RS Snapshot book on Barcelona yet. There is a new edition coming out in January, but I have to book my frequent flyer miles flight next month.
