We are visiting Munich on July 31. We will be driving from Rothenburg that morning. Does anyone know about how long the drive will take down the Romantic Road? We are wanting to see Neuschwanstein Castle that same day, and we don't know what time to reserve tickets for? Thanks for any suggestions.
The train takes 3-4 hrs so I'm guessing its roughly the same if you drive.
On a related note, does anyone know if there are trains from rothenburg to Frankfurt?
There are no direct trains. You have to take the small train from Rothenburg to Steinach. There you can get a train to Frankfurt. I think I had to make another change before Frankfurt, I cant remember where.
Vin, the train goes from Rothenburg to Steinach. It's a small spur line. In Steinach, you take a regional train to Würzburg. From Würzburg you can take either an express train or a regional train to Frankfurt.
To clarify, we are not taking the train. We will be driving in a rental car. I'm already saving up money for the gas. :)
Thanks,
Jana

Jana, you can get the route and the duration at the above web site.
Have a great trip,

Thanks so much Perry. That site will come in very handy.
Are you site-seeing on the way?
If you want to get there quickly from Rothenburg, take the autobahn. I didn't go straight but I would guess no more than two hours.
The Romantic Road is slow and scenic and can take a long time if you stop to look around at different towns.
When we drove, we spent two days. The first we started in Bacharach, drove to Wurtzburg and worked our way down to Rothenburg. The second we worked our way down to Reutte for the castles the following morning and Ehrenberg ruins after lunch.
Jana, I just input your itinerary on the website www.mappy.com If you go autobahn v.s. romantic road it's approx. 258 km. The route they suggested doesn't go through Munich. I'm sure you could plug that in instead. From our experience, you would not be able to drive the Romantic road and be able to see Neuschwanstein castle that same day. You might be able to see the castle that afternoon if you drive the autobahn. It would have to be a late afternoon tour. Don't forget you need to walk up the hill (approx. 45 min.) to get to the castle. Have fun.
