I didn't realize renting a car in Portugal and returning in Spain would cost 4 times as much as renting and returning in Spain. I need a cheap and quick way to get from Portugal to Seville. Any ideas? Is there a fast train for any city in Portugal to Seville?
Hi Faisal, Many of us have faced the same conundrum: connections between Portugal and Spain are not as good as one expects, and the drop-off fee for a rental car is stunning. The best option for you will depend on exact where you are coming from. On our last trip there (2 years ago) we were coming from the Algarve (southern Portugal), and headed for the Pueblos Blancos (Arcos de la Frontera specifically). We had a car in the Algarve (rented in Lisbon), and wanted a car for the hill towns, too (to drop off in Granada). But the agency wanted crazy money for dropping off across that border, so we dropped the car in a town on the Portuguese side (Faro), took a bus to the actual border, walked and ferried across a river to Spain, then took another bus to another town, then picked up another car there, and drove on. It was a bit of a hassle (in other words, an adventure) but it saved many hundreds of Euros so for us it was worth it. I would do it again. The trick is to find a town with a car rental agency on each side of the border, and hopefully those towns are fairly easily linked by bus or other public transit. One other option: I believe there are inexpensive flights from Lisbon to Sevilla, but not every day. Might be worth looking into. Good luck!
Flying is the only quick way. Whether it is cheap or not may depend on your budget or when you buy the tickets. But there are no good connections between Portugal and Spain. There is a bus, which is cheap but not quick - about 7-8 hours.
fly to Madrid and then take the AVE to Seville?
