During one segment of our trip to Spain that starts next week (!), we want to somehow get from Sevilla to Granada, with a visit to Gibraltar in between. I'm stuck on the logistics. What's the easiest and most time-efficient way to do so? From what we can tell, there aren't any day trips from either Sevilla or Granada to Gibraltar. If we rented a car (any car company suggestions welcomed!) and left Sevilla in the morning, I think we can make it to Gibraltar by lunch. How much time would we need there, and could we manage to drive all the way to Granada that night? Thanks!
You can drive from Sevilla to La Linea in two hours. Seek Rick's book for a great underground parkade about a block from the border (use Google Earth or Maps to locate entrance at 36 9' 29.67" N, 5 20' 54.27" W). DO NOT DRIVE on Gib. You can tour in half a day. Again, follow Rick's tips (buy the all-day bus ticket, head out to Point Europa, come back to the cable car, wander thru the older section of the city, then bus back to the border). La Linea to Granada, under three hours. But to make time, avoid the old A-7 highway along the coast and stick to the new AP-7 toll road that bypasses all the towns. Four lanes, divided, 120 Kmh. It gets busy winding thru the mountains north of Malaga, but once you swing east onto the A-92, it's clear sailing. Granada back to Sevilla, under three hours, right down the A-92...again, four lanes divided. We use carjet.co.uk in Spain, great rates that include the CDW. But check their dropoff fees if you plan to leave the vehicle in Granada.
Bare in mind that there can be a wait at La Linea to go through British customs. On my last trip, the wait was more than one hour. Be sure to factor in the wait time when you determine what time to begin your trip.
