Hello. I have been trying to figure this out, and I figured maybe you all would be able to help me. I know it is all resting on my flight getting in when scheduled, but I really would like to visit dachau. I arrive on a Wed at around noon. I am guessing it will take awhile to show my passport and such. I know that Dachau closes at 5:00. I will not be able to make it there any other day, so i have figured out that I can take a train there or take a taxi and head straight there, and check into my hotel after, BUT what do i do with my luggage? I read on dachau's website that there are no lockers or any place to put your luggage. I am guessing they don't let you wheel it around in there either? Any ideas or insight
Yes - you can get there in time. I would let your arrival time dictate exactly what you do. If you get off the plane, through passport control, etc. quickly you could take your luggage to your hotel and drop it there. If it takes a bit longer, follow James's advice and stash your bags that the airport. That's the safest option time-wise, but it will take a while to backtrack to get your bags at the end of the day if you do this. You can do a quick visit to Dachau in about two hours. That will allow you to walk through all of the buildings and see the memorials. It won't really allow time to watch the movie or visit the attached convent. Coming from the airport, allow about an hour to take a train to there and about 15 minutes to walk once you get off of the train. Good luck.
Jill Good that you are planning this in advance and want to see Dachau, a very moving experience. Are you arriving in Munich? What time is your arrival? Is your hotel in Munich? Also, if you have traveled to Europe before, how do you handle the jet lag? I like to call the first day a Recovery Day. Some people could go to Dachau and they would be fine and others would not. With this information, we could help you. Bobbie
Here is some more info. :) I will be arriving at MUC at around noon. (Cross my fingers that we are on time after a 2 hour layover in London). My hotel is in Munich by Marienplatz. I have been to Europe several times and only suffered from jet-lag once, but I plan to take a tylenol pm on the flight over to help me sleep on the plane this time. Jet-lag or not, Dachau is a priority. Thanks for your help.
Jill, a few years back we encountered the same problem. We tought there were lockers at Dachau train station but we could not find any. So we sent to the hotel across the road from train station and ask them if they could keep our luggage while visiting Dachau. They were very nice and said yes, we had a late lunch there afterwards and the food was good! When facing the street with the train station in the back, the hotel is to your left, sorry can't remember the name...
Have a nice trip!
Although the Dachau website might say that there are no lockers at the Memorial, the station plan (www.stationsdatenbank.bayern-takt.de/StationsdatenbankBEG/Steckbrief.html?lang=de&efz=8001354) for the Bahnhof shows lockers at the station, right against the station building opposite track 1. You can go from the airport directly to the memorial, but it is kind of complicated. Instead, go from the airport to the Hbf, stash you luggage there (there are lots of lockers), then go to the memorial. There is an S-Bahn to the Dachau bahnhof every 20 min.
My daughter and I asked this very same question last summer. Lee from Colorado was a big help and I see he just responded to you too. There ARE lockers at the Dachau train station. We were NOT too jet lagged and managed to do a very good job of seeing Dachau on the very day we arrived in Munich. We did see two young men dragging large suitcases over the gravel that covers most of the memorial. Boy, were they miserable.
