Does anyone know of a quiet room on the Mosel in Cochem? We once stayed on the Rhine and were kept awake by the trains? We are open to your experiences and grateful for any answers.
Thanks so much! Mitzi
Hi Mitzi, We stayed 4 nights in October 2007 in Valwig, which is across the river from Cochem, at the Hotel Rebenhof. www.hotel-rebenhof.com www.worldisround.com/articles/338870/index.html Paul
In 2008, I stayed in a Privatzimmer (2 double rooms w/baths) on the top floor of a home in Treis (across the river from the station in Karden, which is a 7-10 min train trip to Cochem Bahnhof. Treis-Karden is also the start point for a weekend bus to Burg Eltz. The owner is Dutch and works, I think, for an American company; he speaks very good English. If you like, I can send contact info by PM.
You won't have train noise in Cochem if you stay in the old town area - the trains are in a tunnel behind this part of Cochem - and no road noise if you stay back a block or two away from the River Road. I usually stay in a small 3-room B&B run by Frau Hilken at Löhrstrasse 20, a few blocks from the market square - about 20 Euros each. Tel. 026 71 / 32 54. One room has a private bath, another shares a bath with a single (only if occupied of course.) She speaks only German but says she manages fine with visitors from around the world. I've just shown up in the morning and always gotten a room. But then I was looking for the single. Frau Hilken prepares the most elaborate breakfast I've ever had in Germany - a very sweet lady with knee and hip problems, but I can't promise she's still taking guests at her advanced age. Other Zimmer options here; the zum Fröhlichen Weinberg is just uphill from Frau Hilken's: http://www.bensbauernhof.com/accommodationsrhinemosel.html Gästehaus Albers is in the old town too and gets good marks at booking.com
