Hotels outside of Munich

Can anyone recommend good hotels outside of Munich near a train station? My husband and I are planning a trip for March 08 and will have a rental car but would like to stay outside the city where we can take a train into the city for the sights.

Thanks!

We like the Hotel zur Gred in Freising.

It is a traditional gasthaus-restaurant. There are no elevators but good atmosphere and decent food.

Freising is nice small town to visit in its own right. It is criss-crossed with streams and small rivers. It is a church town with a monastery on the hill (Domberg) overlooking the town that has an attractive chapel. The current pope was ordained there.

Freising also has the oldest operating brewery in the world that has been expanded into a school for brew masters.

Freising's train station is serviced by both the Sbahn system and regional trains. Check schedules at:

With a partners day card from the Munich Sbahn system you can ride all day for about 19 euros.

With a Bayern-ticket at 27 euros you can ride either the Sbahn or regional trains after 9 A.M.

Try the Brauereigasthof Hotel Aying. Small hotel in village of Aying owned by a brewery / one of the Karen Brown recommendations. It's 35 minutes on the S-Bahn to the center of Munich.

Karen, we stayed in Gauting, south of Munich. We stayed at Gastehaus Bauer. You can contact them by e-mail at [email protected] --they don't have a website. They are 20 minutes south of Munich on the S-bahn. All of their rooms have a bath. You can go to the website www.gauting.de and check out other accommodations. We liked this area--it was easy to go to by car.
