Can anyone recommend a hotel near the Zurich airport? We prefer something modern but not too expensive. Thanks.
Last year we spent our last night at Hotel Lowen in Dielsdorf; a pretty town about 20 minutes from the airport and recommended in the Karen Brown guide. It was a great place to stay and the food in their restaurant was excellent. The hotels closer to the airport all seem to be rather expensive. Reservations are recommended.
See the website: "www.loewen-dielsdorf.ch"
We stayed at the Zurich Hilton at the airport. They have a shuttle that runs every 30 minutes. I don't think that you will find too much very near the airport that is really reasonable and has shuttle service to the airport. www.hotels.com will show you a few that are around $100/night. They say airport but you may want to check a map.
Here is a website that can show you some more at the airport. They are not cheap.

Excellent advice from Tim. I was reading the request to literally.
There is absolutely no need to stay close to the airport for flight convenience...unless you just enjoy the sounds or sights of planes. Since the rail system runs directly into the airport you can stay anywhere you like as long as you have access to the train.
You are all so kind. However, I will be in a rental car I need to return to the airport. That's why I would like a hotel near there in addition to the fact that my flight is early morning and I don't want to deal with traffic. Any other hotel ideas? Thanks.
Tim's 100% correct. The rail system allows for hotels far away from the noise associated with airports. Just be aware of times/schedules/track lines at the trai station. They're always on time too.
Gail, Mc Donald's ventured into the hospitality business early this century and opened up the Golden Arches Hotel in Rümlang, which is just outside the airport. It was built after Mc Donald's ideas and really looks like a Mc Donald's hotel. They had to sell it just a few years later. It's now called the Park Inn Zürich Airport (with free shuttle etc.). The rooms really look different and the restaurant still is a Mc Donald's but the rest is now run by the Radisson SAS group's Park Inn. You should find best rates thru www.hrs.de or www.hotel.de. And here's a link of what it used to look like in the Golden Arches days... http://www.steiner.ch/pdf/bauten/0040_blatt.pdf
Several years ago, I was also flying out of Zurich and returning a rental car. We came upon a Novotel(sp?) hotel near the airport that was very convenient and reasonably priced. It was very modern and clean, unlike the one outside of Geneva.
We're staying at the Park Inn for $126--140 CF. It is near the airport with a free shuttle for those needing that.
Turn in your rental car the day before the flight at the airport. Put your bulky bags in the luggage storage over night and take the train 5 minutes to Zurich downtown train station and find a hotel.
We, too, stayed in the McDonald's hotel because we had a rental car. There's nothing to do there...you can't walk to anything...there's nothing to see. Been there and done that.
Gail,
Bill in Orlando mentioned the Hotel Lowen in Dielsdorf where he stayed on his last night last year... well, I don't know Bill, but I also stayed there last year. You can take a back route to the airport and not have to get on the autobahn except for the last half mile. The hotel & the town are ideal (one of Karen Brown's better recommendations), plus you are very close to the medieval town of Regensburg which is a very interesting place to visit.
