Going to Munich in April '13 Hotels way to expensive! Is there someplace near Munich to stay and take train into city. Any help would be appreciated!!
Norm from San Jose ca
Since I think that Munich hotels are quite moderate in price, maybe you should tell us how much you are looking to pay? Are you looking for a single, double, etc?
Norm, keep in mind too how much it will cost money- and time-wise to travel from out of the area into the sights you actually came to see. The Hotel am Viktualienmarkt is 120E for a Double but is right where our friends want to be for one night so in this case it's worth the cost....to us.
norm, It would help to have some idea on what price range you want. The Guidebook has suggestions for reliable lodgings in various price ranges. If price is really an issue, you could also consider staying in a Hostel. Cheers!
Munich is reasonable when there is not a trade fair in progress. Bauma is in April and the prices are way up during that period. Munich is a transportation hub so you can stay in places in any direction. I would check surrounding cities like Landshut, Augsburg and Landsberg. Freising is also good but it might be too close if there is a trade fair in progress. We have stayed in Landshut and Freising, both at nice destinations in their own right. Landshut is about 50 minutes from Munich by regional trains. You can use the Bayern Ticket round trip and for local transportation in Munich. I would check rooms at hrs.com and train schedules at this Die Bahn template: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en We have stayed in Munich a few times at less than 100 euros a night.
Agree - hotels in Munich are pricy! Last trip we stayed at Europastars - out past train station but this year we decided we want tone in the center (both times just one night) and we are booked at Hotel Torbrau - this is our first night of vacation and room is 242 euros - about double the price of the rest of our hotels (in Italy)
The Novotel at the Messe frequently has hot deals. Basic, modern, quiet. It's a simple 15 min train ride to the downtown area. We usually stay there, as there is also a large mall attached with a grocery store.
Note what Gary Mc said. Bauma is a huge trade fair that takes place in April; the 2013 dates are 15 April to 21 April. Hotel prices (if you can find a room) will be very high during that time. So you might need to rearrange your plans or stay outside of Munich.
I once stayed here, in Landsberg am Lech, on the last Saturday night of Oktoberfest, and they had not raised their rates (about 70€ for a double). Their website is in German, but I think they speak English well enough for you to email them (address under "Kontakt". Landsberg is about an hour from Munich Hbf (change in Kaufering). A Bayern-Ticket (22€ 1st traveler, 4€ 2nd - 5th) will get you to Munich and back, and also all conveyances in Munich, for a day. BTW, TripAdvisor ranks Augsburgerhof #1 in Landsberg, but doesn't allow direct booking or provide contact info. If you ask TA for booking advice for Augsburgerhof, they try to divert you to other properties they book, all more expensive and most out of town.
