Our flight home from Frankfurt will be fairly early in the morning. We'll be coming from Bacharach and would like to stay within a reasonable driving distance of the airport. We don't want to stay in Frankfurt or at an airport hotel. Any suggestions for an inexpensive hotel or guesthouse?
A couple years ago we stayed at the Jagdschloss Munchbruch in Morfelden just about a 10 minute drive from the Frankfurt Flughafen. Charming and very comfy for about 70 euro.
The last time I flew out of FRA, I stayed in Mainz, in Hotel Königshof. The price is reasonable, the location is good (right across the Bahnhofsplatz from the Mainz Hbf), about 30 min by S-Bahn from FRA. You can get into FRA faster from Frankfurt Hbf, but I did not like the looks of the hotels there as much. And Mainz is on the way from Bacharach to the airport.
Mainz is very convenient, a nice place for a final evening. Have a walk through the Market square and the old town near the Dom (cathedral) and a nice meal. As Lee suggests, getting to the airport is a snap by train, and there are many morning departures beginning quite early. Once there, just take the escalator up, and you're in the terminal. Drop your car in Mainz if possible the night before you leave to avoid morning traffic and drop-off hassles.
Thanks for the suggestions. I can't for the life of me remember where I stayed the last time I rented a car in Germany. We're kind of committed to dropping the car off in Frankfurt because of the really good rate we're getting by returning it there. I know about the hassles - the attendant last time was of Arabic descent and patted the car down like he was absolutely sure it contained a bomb. I was 50 at the time...and the baby of the group by many, many years. This time I'm taking our pastor, his wife, son and sister-in-law as well as our organist and pianist. I may wind up in jail!
The Lindner Congresshotel in Höchst starts from €40 per room and night on hrs.com, hotel.de, bookings.com etc. It's in the greater Frankfurt area but in a suburb down by the river with walking distance to a 12th century market square, castle etc. Absolutely gorgeous and still a hidden gem to American tourists (so far only the Asians seem to have discovered it but prices in the local restaurants on that medieval market sqaure surrounded by half-timbered buildings and the main tower of the castle are still low and the place is filled with locals. There also is a bus service to the airport from Höchst.
"The Lindner Congresshotel in Höchst starts from €40 per room and night".
And breakfast is an additional €21 per person.
Oh, well. Airlines do it.
Plenty of places to get more affordable breakfast around the Lindner... Also I've seen rates for €49 incl. breakfast on HRS.com...
