After spending some time on the internet looking for hotels in Lausanne or Montreux, I'm getting the feeling that a double room with a private bath is going to be $150 (US) and up way up per day. Can anyone recommend a hotel or B&B with private bath in either city where the tariff is less than $150/day? The place can be very modest, so long as it is clean and can be reached from the train station via public transit or on foot. My wife and I will be there in late April-early May. If lodging costs are lower, w e would definitely consider staying in another town close to Lausanne or Montreux so long it is no more than a 30 minute train ride away and the trains run frequently.
My family and I stayed at the Hotel Elite in Lausanne a few years ago. The hotel is very close to the main train station, but it is a steep climb up the hill from the train station to the hotel. The triple room we stayed in was okay, but the breakfast in the morning was great! Penn
We stayed at Lausanne Guesthouse & Backpacker in a upper level private room w/ shared bathroom. It was very nice, comfortable, quiet and squeaky clean with elevator and 1.5 blocks from train station. We even had a great view of Lake Geneva. The hostel portion is downstairs so you are not affected by the dorms. It is very well run w/ a share kitchen/laundry if you wish. we paid $85 USD in 2009for a dble a great rate for Laussane! I would stay ther again, no question.
Jon, we also have stayed at Hôtel Elite and really like it. We had 2 Doubles in 1993 and a Triple in 2001. The roomsespecially with view!are lovely, staff helpful and breakfast excellent. Of course, please note the years we stayed there. (Also stayed at Hôtel de la Paix but that was in 1962-65 on parents' budget!) Keep in mind that Switzerland is very expensive!
Jon, Vevey is on the rail line about 3 minutes from Montreux and 12 minutes from Lausanne. Have not stayed in these, but hotel Des Negociants and Hotel de la Vielle Tour might meet your needs. Check out their web sites. Both hotels are relatively close to the train station, although Vielle Tour you might take a bus..... but it is walkable. Again, I have not stayed in them, perhaps others on the Helpline have and can give more details.
We also stayed at the Guesthouse/Backpacker Hostel a few years ago - it's just a block from the train station (easiest access from the back of the train station, if I remember correctly). It was a great option as noted above.
