I will be in Marseille for 2 nights (June 28-29) and return for 1 night (July 4). I would like a low cost hotel near major sights and within walking distance to the train station. Please make suggestions, Lloyd
Etap Hotel Marseille Vieux Port, €61 per night for your 2 night stay, if booked now - non changeable, non-cancelable you can get it for €5 a night less... A Métro ride from the station but for that price??? You did say low cost. I haven't stayed at that particular location but Etaps are cookie cutter and should all provide a similar clean, neat, cookie cutter, industrial, very cheap experience.
The train station area (at least the parts I saw) isn't that nice, and it's not that convenient; I'd want to stay somewhere else, even for a short stay. I stayed at the Hotel Alizé http://www.alize-hotel.com/en/. I paid extra for the port view, which was quite nice, but the non-view rooms are cheaper. I'd stay there again. However, I just checked the prices; it's gone up substantially since I stayed there in 2006, so I'm not sure if it's in your price range. I also haven't checked recent reviews. Even if I didn't stay at the Alizé, I'd want to stay in that general area- very convenient and pleasant, as you're at the port and can walk to several districts near the water. Two things to be aware of with the Alizé: there are stairs to get to the lobby, then an elevator to take you up to your room. And English speakers were in short supply at the desk; I did most of my transactions in my "French," until check out, when there was an English speaker on duty.
I echo Harold. The area near the train station is very grubby and creepy. Stayed at a hotel in that area once- never again. Spoiled my whole day. Definteley stay somewhere else
An Etap near the Vieux Port would be perfect. It's a SUPER easy metro ride from the train station to that stop, seriously, it takes 5 minutes. You definitely want to be centered around the Vieux Port for walking to most of the sights. Key sights include the Port itself, and it's morning fish market, the two massive churches on either side of the port, the old fortress remains on either side of the port, and the Panier quarter. I was able to see all of this on foot with the exception of the Notre Dame de la Garde, which you can either take a bus or a taxi to.
