Hotels in Salzburg and Vienna

Can you recommend hotels in Salzburg and Vienna if arriving by car?

In Rick Steves' Germany/Austria tour book, he has several B&Bs listed on Moosestrasse which is a lovely tree-lined street on the outskirts of Salzburg. Haus Ballwein is one of them and is a 15 minute bus ride into the city center. Personally, I would not drive into the city center because of the lack of parking.

Victoria, I stayed at Hotel Krone on my last visit to Salzbug and would certainly recommend it. The room was comfortable, the staff were great and it's in a very convenient location - easy walk to the other side of the river and other sights, lots of nice restaurants and shops in the area, etc. I was travelling by train, but as I recall there's a large underground car park nearby on Linzer Gasse, and apparently there's a reduced cost for guests of the hotel. They can provide further details. Happy travels!

Dirk, you are so, so right. Very elegant for a reasonable price. Champagne for breakfast included at no cost. The Weise Taube in Salzburg.

We spent 4 nights in Salzburg at the Hotel Ganslhof in fall 2011. This is a small hotel. The rooms were very simple, but clean. It is near a car free area and so the location was excellent for an easy walk to everything. We traveled by train, but there was parking on the property.

My recommendation is to leave your car in a Park and Ride garage and forget about it until you leave Vienna. These P+R garages are all conveniently located on a subway line, making it easy to reach anywhere in Vienna. They are also safe/secure and cost 3 Euro/day. A car in Vienna is a nightmare. Not having to factor long term parking into the equation also opens up your hotel options. Here is a helpful link in English: http://www.parkeninwien.at/en/Park-and-Ride.html My additional suggestion - use booking.com to search for hotels and come up with a short list, asking for further feedback here.

We spent three nights at the Hotel Elefant in Salzburg's Old Town last month. Excellent location if you want to explore the city center. The Elefant was a cute, small hotel in the heart of Old Town. Breakfast was included and was very good. Decent-sized bedroom and bathroom for Europe. We parked our car in the large parking garage in the mountain under the fortress and only used it once for a day trip to Berchtesgaden. It was about a 5-minute walk to our hotel from the garage. You will receive a parking discount through the hotel.

In Salzburg we like the Hotel Bergland. http://www.berglandhotel.at/ It is in "new town" about 10 minutes walk along Linzer Gasse to old town. We arrived by train but the website says free parking on the hotel grounds. Nice, helpful folks and they serve a good breakfast. It is in a quiet, residential neighborhood. I rather liked the area.

On our last couple of Salzburg trips, we've gone the B&B route. Parking was not an issue in either, as there is sufficient street parking. There should be plenty of B&B's listed on Booking.com and AirBnB.com. In the Vienna center city, you'll need to park your car in a secured parking garage. We started staying at K&T Boardinghouse about 13 years ago, as it was where Rick Steves stayed at the time. Tina has since added a second location, and we'll be staying with her in April. See: http://ktboardinghouse.at/ K&T's locations are the best in town, and is maybe 6 blocks (10 minute walk) from the Ringstrasse and the city palaces. And their prices are also very inexpensive @ 79E.
Have a great trip!

Another vote for Tina at K&T in Vienna -- even with 89 steps it was great! Ask about the first-floor rooms if available
In Salzburg we liked Hotel Drei Kreuz for location and GREAT breakfasts.
